Discover Mallorca in Winter

Mallorca is situated in the Spanish Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea and is the largest island of the country with a population of just under one million. Flights from London to the capital Palma`s San Juan airport are just over 2 hours and within the capital itself there is an efficient public transport system. Outside the city public transport is being overhauled all the time and it’s best to check before you travel at one of the many tourist offices. Hire cars or transfer cars are an excellent alternative.

Due to its position this delightful island enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Its winters are mild, but can be stormy. The average October temperature ranges between 12 and 21 degrees Celsius. January is the coldest month with temperatures of 4 to 13 degrees Celsius, before April brings warmer temperatures of 8 to 17 degrees Celsius and over Christmas the temperatures can even reach 20-22 degrees Celsius. Happily, there are on average about 5 hours of sunshine throughout the winter months. So basking in the sun can be a possibility during the winter months, but swimming in the sea or outdoor pools will for many be too chilly. However for those who do like a fresh swim in the sea will have the beaches mostly to themselves since they won’t see many locals getting in.
The sea acts as a temperature regulator, so the climate is often better in coastal areas than inland. For example in the northwest the Tramuntana range of mountains makes the area prone to more rain and sometimes even snow. However it must be noted that about 40% of the annual rainfall in Mallorca falls between September and November, so do go prepared.

However you will find that this `wetter` time of year attracts lower prices, so if you`re visiting the capital Palma to explore its many art galleries, museums, or beautiful cathedral this could be a great time to visit. However the spring time, still attracting major discounts, is favoured by those wanting to take advantage of the wonderful walking and cycling that this island offers. Looking around the secluded monasteries, such as Sanctuary of Sant Salvador, which sits atop the mountain in Felanitx, or vineyards that are dotted around, such as Binissalem Wines in central Mallorca with its unique young reds and Crianza, is perfect for the winter months as tourism dwindles and you have the freedom to explore in peace. With plenty of bars and restaurants open throughout the winter you can enjoy the local cuisine too.

Winter can be time for pampering yourself and there is no shortage of professional therapists and spas providing luxurious treatments, such as the award winning La Residencia in Deià, with unrivalled views over the wooded hillsides and therapies to soothe and relax you. Also should you wish your pet to accompany you, there are many accommodating places to stay around the whole island, such as the Finca Can Penya with its warm and friendly owners and close proximity to the old town of Soller. By bringing your dog with you on holiday you have the great opportunity to interact with the locals and their dogs; for the moment there are over 147.000 dogs, just on the island Mallorca itself.

Spain is undeniably a popular choice for visitors with cheap holidays in Salou and along the coast, but winter in Mallorca with its beautiful scenery, the variety of choice of activities and hospitality can be just the tonic you need.
